FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about how AEGIS Blackwall works, what it touches on your PC, and how your data is handled.
What is AEGIS Blackwall?
AEGIS Blackwall is a desktop control center for Windows security and privacy. It brings Microsoft Defender, the Windows Firewall, ransomware protection, privacy settings, tracker blocking, drive encryption status, startup control, and network tools into one clear interface — with live status read directly from Windows.
Is it an antivirus that replaces Microsoft Defender?
No. AEGIS does not scan files itself or replace Defender. It manages and surfaces the protection already built into Windows — Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Firewall, and Controlled Folder Access — so you can see and control your real security posture without digging through Windows menus.
Does AEGIS collect any data about me?
No. AEGIS has no telemetry, no analytics, no advertising, and no user accounts. Your security data and preferences stay on your PC. The only network connections it makes are update checks and links or tools you choose to open. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
Why does it ask for administrator access?
Changing protected Windows settings — like Defender toggles, firewall profiles, the hosts file, or startup entries — requires administrator rights. AEGIS runs with normal permissions for reading status and only requests elevation (a standard Windows UAC prompt) at the moment you make a change that needs it. It never asks for your password directly.
How does tracker blocking work?
AEGIS adds curated lists of advertising, analytics, and telemetry domains to the Windows hosts file, so those domains resolve to nowhere system-wide. There are no drivers, no proxy, and no background service — and everything is removable in one click. A live counter shows how many lookups your blocklist actually stopped in the last 24 hours.
A website or app stopped working after I enabled blocking. What do I do?
Turn the affected category off on the Tracker blocking page, or choose “Remove all AEGIS blocking.” The hosts file is restored instantly. Blocking is conservative by design — Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, and Defender are never touched — but if something you rely on breaks, disabling the relevant category fixes it immediately.
Does AEGIS connect me to a VPN or change my connection?
No. VPN detection is read-only. AEGIS checks which trusted VPN clients are installed and which is actively protecting your PC, but it never changes your VPN settings or connection. Encryption status (BitLocker and VeraCrypt) is read-only in the same way.
How are updates delivered?
AEGIS updates itself in the background using a secure, signed update feed. There is no account and no tracking involved — the app simply checks whether a newer signed build is available and applies it. Release notes are published on this site.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
AEGIS Blackwall targets 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Some controls depend on features that vary by edition and Windows version; where a setting is managed by policy or unavailable, AEGIS shows that clearly rather than failing silently.
How do I uninstall it?
Uninstall AEGIS from Windows Settings → Apps like any other program. Any changes you made through AEGIS (Defender settings, firewall profiles, hosts-file blocking) are ordinary Windows settings and remain as you left them — uninstalling the app does not revert them. To clear tracker blocking first, use “Remove all AEGIS blocking” before uninstalling.
